SAGA-compliant web-based e-government applications made easy
OpenSAGA is an open-source software platform which supports the efficient development of contemporary web applications. The OpenSAGA platform has been optimized to considerably simplify the design of SAGA-compliant and Java-based web applications and provides unique features which support the generation and development of government and local authority IT systems, specifically in the e-government sector.
Private enterprises, research institutions and government agencies have joined forces in the OpenSAGA initiative to support the proper application and development of the SAGA standard and back the Federal Government in its efforts to encourage the application of SAGA.
SAGA stands for "standards and architectures for e-government applications" and describes standards, technologies and methods for the application of IT in federal agencies. With its announced 5.0 version, SAGA will gain sustained significance for all software systems operated by the Federal Government (quote from the SAGA 5.0 concept: "[...] for the first time, the decision of the IT Council can make SAGA 5.0 compulsory for the whole federal administration. SAGA will be compulsory for future software systems with immediate effect and for existing software systems upon extension of their functionalities. In cases where existing software systems must be adapted for this reason, high costs which cannot yet be estimated may arise.") SAGA defines compulsory, recommended and optional procedure models, methods, architectures and technologies for e-government applications. Its range of topics stretches from data centre operations through web accessibility and security to the definition of standard architectures. The guidelines defined by SAGA are of such fundamental significance that its fields of application are no longer restricted to public authorities alone.
SAGA and consequently OpenSAGA offer great user potential for private enterprises and public administration. Read on to find out why:
